Ergonomics Is Part of Safe Driving in Hollywood

When we talk about safe driving in Hollywood and South Florida, we often talk about avoiding distraction, drunk driving, and other dangers. While these are all important, it’s also crucial to set up your vehicle so it helps you drive safely.

If you drive often or drive for work, especially, it is important to ensure your car is set up for ergonomics. You can do this by reading your car manual and:

  • Adjusting the steering wheel: If your knees hit the wheel while you are seated or driving, raise the wheel. Consider tilting it slightly, if needed, so you can keep comfortable control of your vehicle. You want a steering wheel which will encourage you to keep both hands on the wheel, since this will give you maximum control and can help you react quickly to avoid a collision.
  • Adjusting your seat: When sitting in your car, you should be able to reach the steering wheel without having to reach and you should comfortably be able to reach the controls and pedals. You should also be able to see clearly. If you are under 5’3, you may want to invest in an extra cushion or have your seat adjusted to ensure you have a clear view over the hood of your car.
  • Adjusting the headrest: The headrest should be at least 2.5 inches or higher from the top of your head, but should be lower than the crown of your head. It should not obstruct your visibility.
  • Adjusting your controls: Check your dashboard and controls and set up everything for your comfort. You may wish to turn down the lighting on your panel, for example, to reduce glare, or may want to pre-set your favorite music to ensure you do not have to adjust anything as you drive. This can help you avoid distracted driving.
  • Adjusting your backrest: Your backrest should be level with your shoulders so it does not block your view of what’s behind you.
  • Getting any dealership adjustments: If you have a hard time seeing, accessing the major features of your car, or driving with comfort, you may need to have your car professionally adapted for you. This is especially likely if you are much shorter, taller, or larger than average or if you have a condition which can affect your mobility. Contact your dealership to find out what adjustments can be made to your vehicle to help keep you safer on the roads.

If you have been in a vehicle accident in Hollywood or anywhere in South Florida, you may wish to speak to an attorney. If your car manufacturer created a design or manufactured a car which was unsafe, you may have a claim and may be able to pursue compensation for your injuries and losses.
