Planning Your Driving Route to Avoid Traffic Collisions

Whether you’re planning your commute, a road trip, a visit to a new destination, or any other drive, planning your route is an important part of knowing what to expect and understanding how to get your final destination. Planning your driving route can help you choose the most expedient and possibly most interesting way to get your destination. It can also help you avoid traffic collisions.

Planning helps you target any potential hazard areas and allows you to choose the route which is least likely to lead to a crash in Hollywood or your community. There are a few things you will want to keep in mind when planning your traffic route:

  • Consider the hours you will be driving. If you’re driving in the morning or afternoon, can you expect heavy traffic from commuters or school drop offs? You can help avoid higher risk areas by avoiding locations which are affected by congestion during the times you will be driving.
  • Consider the weather. When planning your route, don’t forget to look up weather forecasts. Rain and other inclement weather can add time to your drive. In addition, it can affect your route. For example, if you know a certain area is more prone to fog and there are conditions in the forecast which suggest fog is likely, you can adjust your route accordingly.
  • Take a look at construction and road closures. Road closures can add quite a bit of time to your commute and road construction can increase the risk of a collision. Planning detours ahead of time makes it easier for you to get around safely.
  • Consider activities around the driving area. Festivals, races, marathons, fairs, and other activities can mean increased traffic, more people parking, more pedestrians and more congestion. Always stay aware of events which are taking place in the area will you be driving so you know what to expect.
  • Look for amenities. On long drives, especially, it’s useful to look for amenities, such as rest stops, gas stations, restaurants, motels, and other amenities you may need when you get tired, thirsty, hungry, or just need a break. Marking these on your route or taking note of them means you have them on hand when you need them.
  • Consider driving time. Always give yourself some extra time for your drive, no matter where you’re going. Scheduling yourself too tightly can make you more prone to road rage and more tempted to speed. In addition, a tight schedule is far more stressful and is more likely to result in disorganized time. When you know you have plenty of time to arrive at your destination, you have the time to drive in a more relaxed and safer way.
