How likely a collision is – and how likely you are to be injured — will depend on a few risk factors:

1) How long you drive.

Young drivers who don’t have extensive experience behind the wheel are more likely to be in a Florida or Homestead car accident. However, the longer you drive, the more statistically likely you are to be in a car accident, simply because you’re spending more time on the road and it’s only a matter of time before you encounter a negligent driver who may end up sideswiping you or rear-ending your car.

Drivers without insurance have been a problem in Florida for some time, and Hialeah police announced recently that they would be cracking down on motorists who do not obey insurance coverage laws. Experts say that the average Florida driver pays about $400 extra a year due to drivers who fail to get any insurance at all, and police point out that drivers without insurance or valid licenses are often behind hit and run accidents in Hialeah and other communities.

Last month, police in the community checked the validity of insurance cards when pulling people over for traffic violations. It’s not something that police often do, since it requires calling insurance companies to verify whether a driver’s insurance policy is valid and up-to-date. The checks revealed a number of drivers without insurance and some without valid licenses. One man handed police fake insurance information and admitted that he purchased his insurance card in a parking lot.

DUI checkpoints are meant to help protect drivers from inebriated drivers in Miami and other cities. And there is reason to be concerned: According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in 2014 there were 40,677 arrests for DUI in the state. Drunk drivers cause many more serious injuries, including career-ending head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other serious injuries that are permanent and affect a person’s quality of life for the rest of their life.

The idea behind DUI checkpoints is that police randomly stop drivers to see whether they should be further tested for inebriation. If a police officer stops a driver at a DUI checkpoint and the driver exhibits poor motor control or there is an odor of alcohol, the police can further investigate and administer field sobriety test to determine whether the driver is indeed under the influence.

The department had made a commitment to addressing the problem by raising awareness around the issue and stepping up enforcement.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that many hit and run drivers leave the scene of the accident because:

  • They are not licensed to drive
  • They are driving with a suspended license
  • They have no insurance
  • They are not eligible for insurance or a license
  • They are driving drunk or drugged
  • They have outstanding warrants
  • They do not want to pay for insurance increases

No matter what the reason, leaving the scene of an accident is against the law, and authorities are working to find drivers who are involved in hit and run collisions. Details of these cases is published online and in the media so that the public can come forward with information. In addition, body shops are also sometimes able to provide clues that can help police catch these drivers.

Could public transportation help reduce car accidents in Hollywood and other communities? Many city planners and safety experts think so. While public transit accidents in Hollywood and other communities can still occur, they are far less common than car accidents. In addition, studies have found that better transit systems in cities can reduce the risks of traffic accidents overall.

Public transit may reduce car accident rates by:

1) Offering an alternative to drunk driving.

When trying to reduce drunk driving accidents in Florida and other parts of the country, it is important to give drivers an alternative to getting behind the wheel after drinking. When motorists can easily hop on an affordable bus or train after drinking, it may be easier to make the right decision. If drivers have no access to transportation and need to wait for a friend or need to pay a lot for a taxi, they may be more tempted to simply drive themselves home.

According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, car-related personal injury claims have declined across parts of Florida over the past four years, but South Florida has seen the largest declines in the number of claims. In the first three months of 2020, personal injury claims amounted to 3.5 per 100 vehicles but declined to 2.5 per 100 vehicles for the first few months of 2014.

Part of the reason may be due to efforts to curb car insurance fraud. However, part of it may also have to do with reduced payments for plaintiffs. According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, the average amount paid per bill for medical costs declined by 14 percent in Florida between 2011 and 2014. In South Florida, that amount declined 28.7 percent.

Florida is fortunate in that it does not have to deal with the heavy snows, ice, and other winter weather so common in many parts of the country. Despite that, Florida drivers can’t get too complacent about winter driving. Bad weather can happen anywhere and at any time . In Florida in the winter, rainy ways, fog, and other weather conditions can still lead to car accidents in Aventura, Miami, Hollywood, and other Florida cities.

Experts recommend a few things for drivers who need to drive in bad weather:

1) Give yourself more room.

Drivers in good weather need to leave about 3 seconds space in front of them when driving behind a vehicle. This means that when passing a sign or other marker, you should be able to count 3 seconds after the vehicle in front of you passes before you pass the same marker. In bad weather, you need to increase your following distance to at least for seconds or more. If you hydroplane or lose control of your car in a slick surface, this extra time allows you to brake in order to avoid an accident. Leave even more time if you are driving when the rain first starts. According to experts, when rain first starts the roads are even slicker because oil may combine with the rain before it is washed away.
