With Halloween only a week away, many parents are putting the finishing touches on Halloween costumes, are getting ready for Halloween parties, and are planning for a big night of trick-or-treating. While many parents have a plan in place to check over candy before allowing their children to eat it, candy is not the biggest hazard to your children this Halloween. Pedestrian accidents in Hollywood and South Florida are in fact a leading cause of concern.

Children out for Halloween may be interested in candy so much that they forget basic road safety rules. In some cases, if they are unsupervised, they may run out between cars or cross the street in a zigzag pattern, putting them at risk of car accidents. Dark costumes and darkened streets can also contribute to accidents.

Being in a car accident in Hollywood or anywhere in South Florida is terrifying enough, but what happens when the driver of the other vehicle is not from South Florida? Dealing with a driver from another state or even another country can add to the complication of a crash and can even make it difficult for you to seek compensation in some cases.

Unfortunately, authorities also report that drunk driving accidents in Homestead and other South Florida cities can spike around this weekend. For many families, the car becomes especially important in summer months. You may be loading up the car in order to take your teenagers to their dorm room or may be packing up the car for a long road trip or a camp trip. If you’re headed to the lake, your car may double as a boat tow or may contain all of your equipment for enjoying a day on the water.

In these situations, it’s easy to overload your car. Unfortunately, this can be a deadly mistake. Overloading your car can:

  • Add additional weight to the vehicle, changing how the car handles
  • Lead to unevenly distributed weight, causing a higher risk of Hollywood rollovers and other types of collisions
  • Create more blind spots or can block your visibility, leading to car crashes
  • Cause severe injury, since anything you stow inside the vehicle can become a projectile during a car crash

Unfortunately, busy summer months can make it harder to stay safe on the roads. If you’re tired from running around, it can be harder to focus on your driving. Fatigued driving in Homestead and other cities can be exacerbated by the bright sun and heavy heat, which can make you feel even drowsier.

Summer driving in Homestead and Florida is different than driving in other parts of the country. Not only do you need to deal with heat and sometimes severe storms, but the extreme glare from the hot sun can affect your ability to see clearly. With tourists arriving in Homestead and the rest of South Florida during the summer months to take part in the many festivals the area has to offer, the streets can also become crowded, posing an additional problem as you drive.

Take care of your car.

Before going on an extended road trip, make sure that your car is in good enough condition to handle the drive. Take your car to a trusted mechanic for a thorough look over and take care of any issues before you go. Have your oil changed, fluids topped up, and make sure that your windshield wipers are in good repair. Mechanical failure causes many Hollywood and Florida car crashes; taking good care of your car can help you avoid some of these common causes of collisions.

If you were out on the streets of Hollywood and other parts of South Florida this past holiday season, you likely saw the efforts that local authorities instituted to prevent drunk driving. Since drunk driving in Hollywood and other communities can increase during the holiday season, Florida police and advocacy groups respond with awareness and education campaigns and stronger enforcement of DUI laws.

Do Traffic Stops Work?

You may have wondered whether these efforts work. According to Jim Fell and other researchers at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, the answer seems to be yes. Fell and his researchers looked at six different efforts used by police in 30 different communities to stop drunk driving and other violations. The results suggested that the efforts worked and that communities relying heavily on traffic stops saw the lowest levels of drunk driving. Communities that did not use traffic stops or had few of them had rates of drunk driving that were up to three times higher, by comparison. Communities with many arrests for DUI charges also saw less drunk driving than areas with less enforcement.

I had a lawyer on another case and I never spoke to the lawyer and I hated that I never knew what was going on in my case. Mr. Flaxman was in constant communication with me, explained everything to me, and his staff was really great too. My phone calls were always returned immediately. It was refreshing to be able to speak to my attorney personally. I would HIGHLY recommend Mr. Flaxman as an attorney to anyone who has been in an accident. Gloria
