If you are a business leader or entrepreneur with employees, you may be relying on employees to run errands, take a company car to pick up clients, or otherwise may be expecting your employees to drive as part of their work. If this is the case or if you have company cars, your liability may be considerably greater. Each time your employees are in an accident, your insurance costs and overhead costs may rise. Not properly training and not taking steps to reduce distracted driving at work can also mean some of your valued team members get injured.

Car Accidents Caused by Mobile Phones and Selfies in Miami and Florida

In late 2015, a tragic accident in Georgia claimed the life of a bystander and left another driver with permanent brain injuries. The teenager was allegedly using a popular app which awards virtual “trophies” to users who upload pictures of their speedometer while speeding. At the time of the accident, the driver was traveling 107 mph in a 55 mph zone when she crashes into another vehicle.

After the accident, the driver continued to take selfies of herself and her passenger. Both suffered only minor injuries and the driver posted a picture of herself at the hospital on her social media pages. The driver of the other car has sued both the driver and Snapchat, alleging the driver’s action and the app led to serious and permanent injuries.

What Florida is Doing to Stop Distracted Driving

Distracted driving in southern Florida is undeniably a problem. We’ve all seen drivers texting behind the wheel, applying makeup, eating lunch, or otherwise multitasking rather than focusing solely on the road. This is despite the fact that the dangers of distracted driving are well known.

One Year After Florida’s Texting Ban: Does the Law Go Far Enough?

Over a year ago, Florida passed a law that banned texting and driving in the state. While the legislation was meant to stop distracted driving in Miami and other cities, has the law had the intended effect?

Critics claim that the law is not robust enough, since drivers have to be pulled over for another violation in order to be charged with texting and driving. This means that even if officers see motorists texting and driving, they cannot pull the drivers over unless they are doing something else wrong. Stronger bills that would ban texting and driving more firmly and would give police more powers to pull drivers over just for texting repeatedly failed to get passed into law.
